College Athletics: A conversation with SLC Commissioner Tom Burnett
On the potential of Texas State and Texas-San Antonio joining the WAC: "We’ve long understood these two institutions have had this aspiration and while you can have an aspiration without an answer, so to speak, they have both found themselves in a position this opportunity has kind of fallen out of the sky into their laps. Earlier in the summer, none of us thought it would happen. What we learned is that conference membership can change on a dime. It can look tranquil and peaceful one day and turbulent on the next. The WAC has found itself on survival mode. It’s not an envious position to be in and if these two schools help the WAC exist in the future, for a lot of reasons, it’s a forgone conclusion that it will happen. Maybe a lot sooner than a lot of people in our conference thought it would happen."
On his discussions with Texas State and WAC Commissioner Karl Benson: "The lines of communication between me, Texas State and Karl Benson have always been open. I'm talking with each on a daily basis. I think we're all going about it the right way. It's not a secretive effort here. I know what the WAC has to do to keep itself in existence and Karl has been very honest with me about what he wants to do."
On if he feels Texas State and UTSA would jump at the opportunity to join the WAC: "I'm not a betting man, but if there's another opportunity out there for them, I don’t know what is. These are two schools that are sitting on a go waiting for the FBS opportunity. They've been ready to sign up yesterday."
On where the Southland Conference goes without Texas State and UTSA: "There are a ton of options, one of which is to stay where we are with a 10-member conference with eight playing football. Losing these two members doesn't put our conference into survival mode. It puts us into a mode where we can enhance our conference any number of ways, whether it be expansion or staying put. We don't ever want to lose anybody, but we've had a lot of membership change in our history and always adapt to it."

College Athletics: It's simple math, folks
A. Current WAC members: 6
B. FB-playing members Benson wants to join his conference: 2
Part 2
C. ADs that presented: 5 (Texas State, Texas-San Antonio, Denver, Montana and Seattle)
D. Schools with or will have football: 3 (Texas State, Texas-San Antonio and Montana)
E. Schools yet to complete a feasibility study: 1 (Montana)
F. Schools that are FBS ready with or soon to have football: 2 (Texas State and Texas-San Antonio)
Part 3
B = F
Part 4
A + F = Soon-To-Be Reality
College Athletics: Another conference call with WAC Commissioner Karl Benson
According to Benson, five schools presented their case to the WAC — Texas State, Texas-San Antonio, University of Denver, University of Montana and the University of Seattle.
Benson said, "We were impressed with all five and it gave those schools an opportunity to share their plans for the future."
Out of the five, only four have made it clear they want to join the WAC — Texas State, Texas-San Antonio, Denver and Seattle. Montana is still in the process of completing a feasibility study.
In relation to Texas State and Texas-San Antonio, Benson said they "...have made it very clear that they want to move from the FCS to the FBS and made very, very strong presentations..."
Benson also said what made Texas State's presentation great was that the school has a strong funding model and master athletic facility plan in place.
Finally, Benson has stated on a number of occasions that he wants to get the WAC to have at least eight football-playing members. The WAC has six right now and out of the five schools that made presentations Tuesday, three field football programs (Montana, Texas State and Texas-San Antonio).

College Football: Talking with Texas State's X-Man — Xavier Daniels
Xavier Daniels 9-28-10 by Tyler Mayforth
College Football: Notes from the Sept. 28th media luncheon with head coach Brad Wright
- Wright said this will be a light week for the Bobcats as they'll practice Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, lift Friday and then take off until Sunday afternoon.
- There are no major injuries for Texas State to report but Wright said a few players (he would not name who they were) will be kept out of contact drills this week.
- Wright said freshman Tyler Arndt is the true No. 1 quarterback right now. Make of that what you will, but it seems as if redshirt sophomore Tim Hawkins is no longer 1B but No. 2.
- Wright said last Saturday was the most physical he's seen the defense play in his four years as head coach.

College Football: How Mayforth voted in the Sept. 27th version of TSN's Top 25 Poll
2. Appalachian State
3. Villanova
4. Jacksonville State
5. Delaware
6. Stephen F. Austin
7. Massachusetts
8. South Carolina State
9. William & Mary
10. Montana State
11. Richmond
12. New Hampshire
13. North Dakota State
14. Northern Iowa
15. Eastern Washington
16. Cal Poly
17. Texas State
18. Furman
19. Georgia Southern
20. Youngstown State
21. Illinois State
22. Central Arkansas
23. South Dakota
24. Montana
25. Southern Illinois
Mayforth's Take: James Madison has put together quite the season so far and I finally decided to give the Dukes the respect they deserve. Villanova, who was my No. 1 last week, dropped to No. 3 this week. While Pennsylvania always plays the Wildcats tough, I wanted to see 'Nova assert itself a bit more. Delaware jumped Stephen F. Austin because I looked at the overall body of work and the Blue Hens have victories against two then-Top 10 teams (South Dakota State and Richmond) by a combined 44 points while the Lumberjacks have only played Northern Iowa. Otherwise I don't see many points for contention other than Cal Poly ranked ahead of Texas State. While the Bobcats did beat the Mustangs two weeks ago, Cal Poly owns wins against then-No. 1 Montana and then-ranked McNeese State (on the road) while Texas State's quality FCS wins are against the Mustangs and unranked Southern Utah (both at home).

College Football: A preview of how Mayforth voted this week in TSN's Top 25 Poll
1. James Madison — The Dukes deserve recognition
2. App State — A powerhouse in the FCS
3. 'Nova — Wasn't impressed with them this week
4. Jacksonville State — The Gamecocks aren't slowing down
5. Delaware — Stringing together solid win after win
Check back in later for the rest.
College Football: Who was the MVP of Texas State's 42-28 win against Southern Utah?
Our take: While QB Tyler Arndt was deadly with his accuracy, the secondary locked down an All-American wide receiver in Tysson Poots and forced Southern Utah QB Brad Sorensen to look elsewhere. Poots went from an X Factor to a No Factor.

- Texas State defensive coordinator Fred Bleil said Darryl Morris drew the duty of defending Southern Utah WR Tysson Poots Saturday night.
- Last season against the Bobcats, Poots caught 11 passes for 120 yards and one touchdown.
- Bleil said he feels using Morris, who is a physical defensive back, will help slow down Poots.
- Morris is 5-foot-10, 175 pounds while Poots is 6-foot-3, 220 pounds.

College Athletics: More of the WAC-ky situation
If Denver wants to get out of the Sun Belt, a league that is mostly in the Southeast, it must make the full pitch to the WAC.
The hope for the Pioneers is the WAC decides to go with two non-football playing members -- the other being former WCC hopeful Seattle University -- and adds two football playing schools, more than likely Texas-San Antonio and Texas State (unless Montana decides to upgrade its successful football program). Adding two football and two non-football schools would give the WAC 10 members for 2012-13, eight for football. According to a source, the league is also meeting with UTSA, Texas State and Montana on Sept. 28 in Dallas.
More on this as it develops.

Update: I will be appearing on The Bobby Curran Show tomorrow afternoon at 1:20 p.m. to talk about Texas State and the WAC. It's a Honolulu-based radio show on ESPN 1420. You can probably listen live by clicking here.

9. Southern Illinois
10. Elon

22. Cal Poly

Our take: This week's poll was incredibly tough in which to vote because of the amount of upsets last weekend in the Football Championship Subdivision. I undervalued James Madison in the last poll and corrected that error. Felt like I was throwing darts with my eyes closed toward the bottom but it should settle down in the upcoming weeks.

College Football: Does Texas State deserve a spot in The Sports Network Top 25?
Saturday, September 18, 2010
College Football: Polling your feelings about State's 21-12 win against No. 17 Cal Poly
Our take: After narrowing it down to two -- Dexter Imade and the defense (as a whole) -- our vote went to the defense. While Imade's 37-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter all but iced the win for Texas State, it wouldn't have been in that spot without the defense stepping up the entire game.

- Zwinggi finished the game with 159 yards and four touchdowns on 16 carries.
- Not to be outdone, then-freshman running back Karrington Bush toted the ball 11 times for 136 yards a touchdown.
- Texas State opened up a 10-point lead late in the third quarter thanks to Zwinggi's fourth touchdown run of the night, a 10-yard scamper.
- It was Brad Wright's first win of his collegiate coaching career.

College Football: Notes from an interview with Cal Poly head coach Tim Walsh
On what it meant to beat Montana: "It means that we started 2-0. Montana has this big aura surrounding it, but I've beat them before when I was at Portland State. When we beat them that year, we started the season 6-0 and were as high as No. 2, but then we finished the season 2-3 and lost in the first round of the playoffs."
On what his team learned from last year's tough season (4-7 record): "If you've been through an experience, they are learning experiences. There's no guarantee but you can be assured our guys know how to play for 60 straight minutes."
On what Texas State does that might present problems for his team: "Montana just threw the ball for a lot of yards against us with the athletes Texas State has, it might be an issue. O-line size is an issue. Their speed is going to be unmatched. They have some great schemes that could make us vulnerable in a lot of spots."
On what fans should expect to see Saturday night: "All the time at this level, when you take teams from the SLC and Great West and Big Sky, you're talking about great, great football. Just because it doesn't say FBS doesn't mean it's not great football and we're going to prove that Saturday night."
Note: The Bobcat Live Chat is postponed until tomorrow (Thursday) night at 7:30 p.m. I apologize for the late notice. Be ready to talk about everything Texas State vs Cal Poly.

College Football: Notes from Tuesday's media luncheon - Wright and Bleil (9-7-10)
- Texas State head coach Brad Wright said "...at this moment..." the Bobcats will "...switch the rotation..." at quarterback, meaning true freshman Tyler Arndt is the new No. 1.
- Wright added redshirt sophomore Tim Hawkins will still get his snaps as well, since Texas State will continue with its two-quarterback rotation.
- When asked if he'll settle on one quarterback any time soon, Wright said, "What happens in Week 6 when Tyler goes down and the other guy hasn't played any? You're in a situation where you're stuck with someone who hasn't seen the field in a while. You pick your poison."
- Bobcats defensive coordinator Fred Bleil took a lot of the responsibility for the loss to Houston since he dialed up five zone blitzes on Texas State's first 12 plays.
- Bleil said, "We had minus-negative big gainers for them and minus-negatives for us. We felt we needed to hit that guy early and in order to get a win. They just didn't get plays, they got touchdowns out of it. We settled down and got a little more conservative, but we should have got into a rhythm against that game speed."

College Athletics: An interview with WAC Commissioner Karl Benson
Q: In the next six months, the football season will have been completed and basketball would be entering its conference tournaments. What would you want to see out of potential candidates in the FCS such as Cal Poly, Texas State, Texas-San Antonio in those two sports to be able to present themselves as a viable option?
A: Obviously success is a factor. We want to make sure that any teams coming into the WAC are ready from a competitive standpoint to compete in the WAC and make the postseason. Those are things we definitely want to take into consideration.
Q: When you expand, would you be looking to add two teams from the same state for built-in travel partners, such as Cal Poly and San Jose State or Texas State and Texas-San Antonio or is it not important to have an in-state package deal?
A: Geography would be a strong consideration. With Louisiana Tech and Hawaii under the WAC umbrella, both California and Texas would be strong locations for the WAC to expand.
Q: What can you do to promote a stronger staying power for those remaining teams — especially Louisiana Tech and Hawaii — that you didn't for Boise State and BYU?
A: It's important this coming year to have success in football and men's basketball. We would like it to be attractive to existing members and potential members, not only in the FCS but FBS.
Q: With that said, how did the WAC go from a potential BCS conference to one that is marginally worse in football than the Sun Belt in such a short period of time?
A: It happened due to a few selfish acts from several of our universities, but now it's critical that six of our remaining schools have success in the upcoming seasons to make us stronger.
Q: Today, Texas State announced it would be continuing expansion to its football stadium beginning at the end of the 2011 season. The Bobcats are going to add 13,500 seats to bump the capacity to 30,000. Does that make Texas State a better option now and what would make the school and even better option for the WAC?
A: The plan that Texas State has in place to enhance its football stadium and overall athletic program will make them look much stronger when we get down to evaluating schools that can help the WAC grow in the future.
College Football: Notes from the WAC's conference call (9-1-10)
- WAC Commissioner Karl Benson said today during his media teleconference that the WAC established a "Membership Committee" to evaluate prospective candidates.
- Benson said he wasn't at liberty to discuss which candidates would be immediately considered.
- Benson said he hopes to add at least two football-playing members to the WAC and three would be ideal.
- The Daily Record has a call in to Benson to further discuss expansion as it pertains to Texas State.
