College Football: Notes from practice (3/16/10)

  • Texas State ran about 24 five-minute periods at practice Tuesday afternoon.
  • The Bobcats went through various repetitions, which were capped by 1st-and-10, 3rd-and-long and Red Zone drills.
  • After a sluggish start to practice, Texas State picked up the intensity near the end. One player, who will remain nameless, believed "too much partying on the beach" had something to do with it.
  • Tim Hawkins and Eric Soza each threw well, but Soza still has the better spiral and touch. Hawkins looked to make a concerted effort to hold onto the ball for longer in the pocket, but it resulted in him being sacked twice.
  • Local product Roger Martinez (from Lehman) was on the receiving end of some harsh words from defensive line coach Mike Bugar.
  • Bobcats running back Karrington Bush, who was arrested earlier this month, was back at practice and ran through his normal drills.

Karrington Bush is already back at practice from his torn ACL?

Karrington Bush is jogging around at practice but not participating in contact drills. Bush healed quickly form his torn ACL, MCL and PCL.

I am optimistic Roger will do better, he may be just having a bad day. I guess everyone could use a rude awakening to snap out of it,every now and then!

I believe Roger will find a role in the defensive line in 2010. He's filled out (put on about 25-30 pounds) and developed a new swim move. Bugar just doesn't want to see him do spin moves any longer. Those are for defensive ends, in his opinion.

Which of the two QB's, in your opinion, can lead the bobcats to a successful season. I have not been able to make any of the practices. Also, who is being looked at to replace CB Will Thompson?

I think if Texas State uses Tim Hawkins the same way it did last season (zone read out of the shotgun and like-minded plays) with either Eric Soza or Tyler Arndt on regular downs, the Bobcats should be good.

Texas State is fine in the secondary. Darryl Morris or Derek Lopez will be sliding into Thompson's position.
